Transforming NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens

NYC Health + Hospitals (H+H) and the Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) have completed a transformative energy efficiency project at NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. This $8.2 million initiative is part of the city’s mission to decarbonize municipal facilities and optimize energy use, aligning with broader sustainability goals.

The upgrades modernize the hospital’s infrastructure, improving heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems while reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Significant Savings and Environmental Benefits

The completed project is expected to:

  • Save 1.4 million kWh of electricity and 218,000 therms of natural gas annually.
  • Cut greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 1,500 metric tons of CO2e each year, equivalent to removing over 300 cars from the road.
  • Generate more than $400,000 in annual energy savings.

“Investing in energy efficiency is essential for reducing costs and preserving our environment for future generations,” said Neil J. Moore, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Queens. “This upgrade allows us to provide excellent care while fostering a healthier and more sustainable community.”

Cutting-Edge Upgrades in Place

The hospital now boasts several energy-efficient features, including:

  • Chiller plant optimization system: Improves cooling efficiency.
  • Modern exterior lighting: Reduces power consumption.
  • Wi-Fi-enabled window air conditioning systems: Enhances energy management.
  • Boiler burner control upgrades: Improves heating efficiency.
  • Heat pump domestic water heater: Electrifies water heating by capturing ambient heat.

These improvements enhance energy efficiency and improve indoor air quality, creating a healthier environment for patients and staff.

Partnerships Driving Sustainability

The project was made possible through $6 million in funding and technical support from DCAS’ Division of Energy Management (DEM). This initiative is part of the Accelerated Conservation and Efficiency (ACE) Program, which supports energy-saving projects across city agencies.

“Large-scale projects like this are critical to meeting our city’s emissions reduction goals,” said DCAS Deputy Commissioner of Energy Management Sana Barakat. “We’re proud to collaborate with H+H to make meaningful progress toward a sustainable future.”

The Broader Impact of Efficiency Initiatives

This project is part of DCAS’ broader effort to reduce municipal emissions by 50% by 2030. Over the past decade, DCAS and its partners have completed over 14,000 energy efficiency projects, resulting in:

  • A 372,000 MTCO2e reduction in emissions, equivalent to removing 80,000 cars from the road.
  • $128 million in annual energy cost savings.

Through continued innovation and collaboration, NYC is building a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.
