AlphaCare, Magellan Health’s (NASDAQ: MGLN) managed long-term care (MLTC) plan in and around New York City, recently announced that it has launched a Wellness and Resource Series focusing on the health and well-being of New York City’s senior population. The Wellness and Resource Series consists of health fairs at medical centers, senior centers, malls and faith-based organizations in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Westchester County.

Wellness and Resource Series events include:

  • May 18, 2017: Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration (10am -3pm)
  • June 22, 2017: Brooklyn Sports Club, East New York (10am-3pm)
  • Additional Wellness and Resource Series events may be found by visiting www.nyforseniors.com. Dates will be added as they become available.

“Our goal is to make the lives of New York City’s seniors as healthy and active as possible,” said Cindy Lai, senior director of marketing and communications at AlphaCare. “The Wellness and Resource Series is a great way for us to educate and engage thousands of seniors over the course of the year, on the importance of nutrition, movement, and the idea of connecting with one another. We believe this initiative will provide a great deal of information and resources to the seniors, in a way that is both fun and educational.”

“We are all responsible for our own bodies and that’s why we need to raise awareness around taking control of our health,” said Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams. “Through my own experience dealing with Type 2 diabetes, I learned that the body has an incredible capacity to heal itself with exercise, and nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables and natural products. The Wellness and Resource Series is exactly the kind of community collaboration we should be focused on to help our friends and neighbors take control of their health.”

“We are excited to be one of the sites for the AlphaCare Wellness and Resource Series,” said Matthew Cofrancesco, executive director of Brooklyn Sports Club. “We realize how important it is to provide resources and programs for healthy living, particularly for seniors.”  Brooklyn Sports Club provides a variety of programs throughout the year that focus on seniors, including aqua exercise classes and chair yoga.

Health fairs in the series will include informative discussions and the distribution of information regarding safety, housing, healthy cooking and more. In addition to educational information, the fairs will include fun activities for seniors, including the exclusive “Wheel of Health” game, to create engagement and
increase the knowledge of healthy living facts, as well as facts about existing citywide programs.  Free health screenings will be available at select fairs.

AlphaCare is teaming up with a number of organizations to provide services and resources to New York City’s senior population, including the office of Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams, New York for Seniors magazine, Access-A-Ride, American Diabetes Association, Grow NYC and others.
