Healthy Tip Of The Week: How To Prevent High Cholesterol In Seniors During The Holidays

Posted By Pia Fergus

Having high cholesterol can be an immediate danger to seniors. According to Mayoclinic.com, “Cholesterol is a waxy substance that’s found in the fats (lipids) in your blood. While your body needs cholesterol to continue building healthy cells, having high cholesterol can increase your risk of heart disease.”

There are no symptoms of having high cholesterol, and it is more present in seniors than any other age group. During the holiday season, traditional food is made for families, often by the seniors themselves. To reduce the risk of heart disease or heart failure, seniors should consider altering family recipes to make them more health positive.

It is very important that while choosing the ingredients for family recipes, all ingredients should not contain the following:

-saturated fats
-trans fats
-little to no alcohol

Reduce your usage of butter and margarine, cut back on the excess sugar, and make sure to drink as little as possible this holiday season. Your body will thank you for it!
