As part of the city’s Safe Sleep campaign, First Lady Chirlane McCray and Queens Borough President Melinda Katz announced last week the donation of 1,000 portable cradles to families in Queens in efforts to prevent sleep-related injuries among infants in New York City.
According to The Department of Health records show that in 2015 48 sleep-related injuries ended fatally, making it a leading cause of death among infants in New York. As a result, the city launched the Safe Sleep initiative to train and raise awareness about safe sleeping spaces for children under one. “Katz Cradles” is an extension of this initiative, and will make free cradles available at 11 public hospitals, and homeless shelters in Queens.
